Welcome to the Soil Health and Management Extension portal! This site is a collaboration between Dr. Ekrem Ozlu (Assistant Professor and Soil Management Extension Specialist in the Crop and Soil Sciences Department) and Dr. Mallory Choudoir (Assistant Professor and Soil Microbiome Extension Special in the Plant and Microbial Biology Department). Dr. Ozlu’s research digs into optimizing soil health, increasing soil organic matter, challenging saltwater intrusion related issues, and hence maximizing the crop yield by bringing innovative changes to traditional management practices. The goal of Dr. Choudoir’s research program is to translate microbiome science into actionable decision making for optimizing beneficial microbial functions and enhancing crop productivity, sustainability, and profitability.

On this website you can find a general overview of soil physical, chemical, and biological health. In addition, you can find information on different tillage practices with different degrees of disturbances (ranging from no-till to conventional high-disturbance tillage) as well as information on managing cover crops for each physiographic regions of North Carolina, Tidewater, Coastal Plain, Piedmont and Mountains. In the near future there will be additional overviews relating to soil organic matter, saltwater intrusion, and agricultural microbial and biological products.

We are looking forward to sharing our expertise and perspectives with monthly articles on topics related to soil health, soil microbiomes, sustainability, and soil management. In the coming months you can expect articles on managing agricultural machinery to limit soil compaction in North Carolina from Dr. Ozlu, and articles about general categories of commercial microbial inoculants from Dr. Choudoir. We will also be sharing the results of our applied research program.
